Studio wall covered in found photographs, Enda O'Donoghue, Berlin

Enda O’Donoghue – Berlin-based Irish contemporary artist

There is one wall in Enda O’Donoghue’s studio covered entirely in photographs. Hundreds of found photos, all of the same place. A particular smoky corner bar in Berlin, photographed by strangers over the years and shared online. Many of the images depict the heavily graffitied toilet of the bar, an ever-changing cacophony of anonymous marks and tags.

O’Donoghue has been painting from found photographs for over twenty years. His source material is always other people’s images: ordinary photographs, throwaway snapshots, video stills, fragments pulled from the noise of everyday digital life. Images subsumed, buried and lost in the flood, in the system, the endless feed. He collects and catalogues them with a care their original makers never intended. What draws him to one image and not another is something he has never fully been able to explain, yet the selection is meticulous: hours, weeks or months spent looking until occasionally one stops him.

Before he studied painting, he studied computer programming, and the logic of that world never quite left. The painting process is like a manual algorithm: structured, rule-based, systematic, deliberately echoing the logic of digital image compression and processing. He works with traditional materials and methods but with a machine-like logic, dissecting and reconstructing images in a structured, puzzle-like process that is open to and inviting of misalignments, flaws and glitches. Up close, each section is abstract. Stepped back, the image resolves like a jigsaw that was never meant to be solved.

Enda O’Donoghue was born in Ireland and has been living and working in Berlin since 2002. He completed a degree in painting at the Limerick School of Art and Design followed by a Masters in Interactive Media at the University of Limerick.

O’Donoghue has exhibited widely in international group shows, including exhibitions at Sam & Adele Golden Gallery, New York; Pantocrátor Gallery, Shanghai; CHB, Berlin; Meter Room, Coventry; the Moscow Museum of Modern Art; the 2010 Expo in Shanghai; Kunstquartier Bethanien, Berlin; Torrance Art Museum, California; Grimmmuseum, Berlin; Polarraum, Hamburg; and Overgaden, Institute for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen.
Recent exhibitions include Mélange (Galerie Neurotitan, Berlin, 2024), Travels in Hyper Reality (Crane Visual, Cork, 2023), Tondo (Kunstquartier Bethanien, Berlin, 2020), and Alptraum (international touring project, 2018–2021).

His solo exhibitions have taken place in Berlin, Shanghai, New York, and Ireland. In 2012, his work was presented in a major solo exhibition at Limerick City Gallery of Art, and in 2014 he was awarded a Golden Foundation Residency in New York State. He has also curated a number of group exhibitions and has served as an external examiner for the Bachelors and Masters programs in Fine Art at the Limerick School of Art and Design.
